Recovering Organics and Energy from MSW – New Approaches
Norma McDonald has been in the anaerobic digestion industry for the last 12 years, and was the 2016 “Biogas Visionary” award recipient from the American Biogas Council. Earlier positions with Procter & Gamble provided included assignments involving bioplastics, compostable diapers and flushable materials. She is a graduate of University of Wisconsin and a former US Marine Corps officer.
OWS’s recently completed facilities process MSW, extracting an organic fraction that is sent to AD. In one case, the digestate is further processed to produce a clean compost along with a high BTU fraction that is thermally processed for energy capture. In the second case, the digestate is simply co-mingled with a high BTU fraction for thermal processing and energy capture. The facilities are in commercial operation, from 1 to 5 years. The same can be reapplied to a CA-based project to demonstrate the viability of the approach for reaching >75% diversion and maximum energy recovery.
